About Anesthesia

What You Need to Know About Anesthesia

We provide various anesthesia techniques designed to accommodate the particular needs and desires of our patients:

Local Anesthesia

Local is perfect for small procedures, meaning the one location in which we are treating is numbed so patients are fully awake and comfortable.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is a gentle, sedative gas that is breathed in by way of a mask, and promotes a state of calmness while patients remain awake. Its action is transient, thus many patients can return to normal activities soon after the procedure.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is taken in pill form before treatment to reduce anxiety and enhance relaxation. The patient is awake (sedated) during the procedure and may feel drowsy and have little memory of the procedure.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

IV sedation is a stronger form of sedation that enters the bloodstream. Patients typically doze off, swaying between wakefulness and sleep, and remember little or none of the experience. This is perfect for longer procedures or patients who need greater sedation.

General Anesthesia

Reserved for complex surgeries, general anesthetic puts patients into a deep sleep. Under the direction of a trained anesthesiologist, this choice means patients have no pain or memory of the procedure.

Every patient deserves personalized care.

We put the patient first at Englewood Oral Surgery. When you come in for your first visit, our dentists will do an assessment, including your medical history, anxiety level and the difficulty of the procedure. This enables us to suggest the best anesthesia for your particular case.

FAQ's

FAQ About Anesthesia Services at Englewood Oral Surgery

What type of anesthesia is available at Englewood Oral Surgery?

We provide a long list of anesthetic alternatives to keep your comfortable throughout oral surgery. These options include local anesthetics, nitrous oxide, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. Our staff can help you select the product that is best for you given your procedure and medical history.

Is anesthesia safe?

Yes, anesthesia is incredibly safe when performed by professionals in a controlled environment. Our patients are monitored very carefully during and after surgery.

Who will perform my anesthesia?

Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons board certified, and graduated from American Dental Association accredited schools and programs, and are well-trained in intravenous (IV) anesthesia. They work in conjunction with our expert surgical team to keep you safe and comfortable during the procedure.

Will I be conscious during my treatment?

That will depend on what type of anesthesia you get. If you have local anesthesia or nitrous oxide, you can be awake and relaxed. You will be in a twilight state (with IV sedation) or fully asleep (with general anesthesia) and you won't be aware of anything.

What can I do to get ready for anesthesia?

Prior to your scheduled appointment, we will give you specific pre-operative instructions. In general, you may need to stay away from food and drink for a few hours before surgery, have someone give you a lift home and let us know about any medication you are taking.

What can I expect after the treatment?

It is normal to be groggy or sleepy after IV sedation or general anesthesia. The majority of patients recover easily, but rest is essential in the days after surgery and you should follow all of our post-op instructions.

Do you see patients from Englewood?

Yes, we do accept patients from Tenafly, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Teaneck, and all the towns in neighboring communities in the area.
